Getting people to smile is not all that difficult because most people like to smile. However, our desire to smile can be affected by what is going on in our lives. If someone is faced with disappointment or loss, for example, they might be less likely to smile as they go about their daily activities. And for those who may be experiencing sadness, getting them to smile can actually help them find a moment of lightheartedness.
Here are a few tips on how to get people to smile.
Compliment Them
When you're talking to someone and they are not smiling this can make the interaction a bit awkward and uncomfortable. For example, you're at a party or other get together and you're talking to someone who doesn't seem to be smiling much. Perhaps the person you are talking to has nice eyes, their hair is styled in an attractive way, or their outfit looks nice on them. These are things that if you were to compliment them about would probably get them to smile. Complimenting someone is a good way to get them to smile.
Let Them Know They Are Not Alone
Many people, when they are confronted with the hardships of life, feel isolated and alone. And when they feel this way they may think that there really isn't much to smile about. If you have a family member, friend, or co-worker that may not be smiling because of a life difficulty, pull them aside and let them know you understand what they are going through and that you are there for them if they need you. Doing this could help feel more connected to those around them and this is certainly a reason to smile.
Listen
Again, some people may be so troubled about something that it is hard for them to smile. They may just need someone to talk to. Often, when a person can voice what is going on in their lives, to someone who is truly listening, it can relieve them of some of their burden. When your burden is lightened you have more reason to smile.
Tell A Joke
Telling a good joke is a good way to get someone to smile. However, jokes can be a little tricky as a means to get a person to smile. If you are going to tell a joke to help someone smile the joke should be one that is easily understood. The person telling the joke should know the other person and what makes them laugh. Telling a joke that the other might not approve of could actually make an uneasy situation worse.
Send A Card
Sending an unexpected greeting card to someone is another good way to get them to smile. Everyone enjoys surprises of affection that they are not expecting. A greeting card lets the recipient know that they are in the thoughts of the sender. When people know that other people are thinking about them they can't help but to smile.
Call Them
Like sending a greeting card, an unexpected phone call can make someone smile, especially when that phone call involves some laughter and lighthearted conversation. This is particularly effective when that phone call is to a family member or friend who could use some support from those who care. Again, when we know someone cares we canĂt help but to smile about that.
How to get someone to smile is not really a difficult task, but it requires you to put forth a degree of effort. However, if you care about the other person your effort goes forth without a thought about yourself. When you set aside some time for someone else that a simple way to get people to smile.
